HYROX
Rank 1 by conversation volumetrailing month
Six fitness-racing brands measured across the eight things the Beijing hygiene incident put on trial · Quid Monitor ad-hoc topic definition · trailing month to Sept 20, 2026 · 254,892 posts
HYROX went into race weekend at +52 net sentiment. It crossed zero within days and has sat on the floor ever since — -17 at the end of the window, with no recovery in the curve.
This set splits on volume, not on mood alone. HYROX is negative on 7 of the eight themes while carrying 124,302 posts. Tough Mudder is negative on five, but on 974 — a long-running operational grievance at a fraction of a percent of the conversation. Everything else with real volume is positive nearly everywhere, and the gap is not subtle: CrossFit scores +62 on hygiene in the same month, through the same context gate and the same measure, that HYROX scores -37. That is what separates a brand crisis from a category one — if competitive fitness were under scrutiny generally, the whole set would bend together, and it does not.
The more useful finding is where HYROX's floor actually sits. It is not hygiene at -37. It is rules and fairness at -59, the worst cell in the brief, with crisis response at -47 just behind. The conversation moved off what happened to an athlete and onto who let it continue, and then onto what the organisation said afterwards. The single theme still above water for HYROX is coaching and training at +8 — the product people buy, not the event they attended.
The competitive set is what makes that readable. CrossFit dipped in the very same week and finishes the window at +40; that is the shape of a passing news event. HYROX bottomed at -21 and has gone flat there rather than climbing back.
Every brand scored through the same fitness-racing context gate, over the same trailing month, with each brand set as the sentiment focus. Ranked by conversation volume.

Daily post volume and daily net sentiment for all six brands, 2026-08-14 to 2026-09-20, on the same context gate and brand definitions as the rest of the brief. Sentiment is a 7-day trailing rolling mean weighted by that day’s post volume, because raw daily net is only meaningful where the volume supports it — HYROX and CrossFit run in the thousands of posts a day, DEKA Fitness averages seven. HYROX’s raw daily line is drawn faintly behind its smoothed line. Dashed lines have a median under 100 posts a day and are directional only.
HYROX runs at +52 on the eve of the race, in line with where it had sat all month. Volume peaks on 2026-09-14 at 22,843 posts — about 14 times its own median day — and the sentiment line crosses zero the day after race day. The floor is -21 on 2026-09-18.
The tail is the part worth arguing about. Volume is most of the way back to baseline; sentiment is not. HYROX ends the window at -17 against CrossFit’s +40, and CrossFit dipped in the very same week. A volume-only dashboard would have called this over days ago.
For each brand, what wins people over and what frustrates them, with one representative post per side. Every quote is a real post with a working link; none is paraphrased.
HYROX owns the category conversation at 124.3K posts, more than every other brand here combined, and it is the only one of the six whose sentiment sits underwater. It is negative on seven of eight themes. The floor is rules and fairness at -59, below hygiene itself at -37; the one theme still positive is coaching and training at +8, which is the product people buy rather than the event they attended.
The training identity is intact. Coaching and training is the only theme still above water at +8, and “inspiring example of perseverance” is the second-largest positive attribute at 2.7K posts. Race day still delivers the feeling. “Win”, “compete” and “finish strong” lead the positive attributes, and first-timer and personal-best posts keep coming through the crisis window. Scale is not the problem. At 124.3K posts HYROX carries roughly half of all fitness-racing conversation in the month; reach held even as sentiment fell.
Officiating, not hygiene, is the deepest wound. Rules and fairness is the worst cell in the entire heatmap at -59, worse than hygiene at -37. The argument is not that it happened; it is that officials were allowed not to intervene. People are itemising the cleanup. “Full refund”, “disinfect affected area”, “disinfect waste” and “disinfect equipment” each appear in more than 1.5K posts, and “public health risk” ranks among the most-discussed things.
Back to Day 1 of HYROX training, but this time… doing things RIGHT. I’m so happy there’s finally HYROX training at cofitnessph!View post ↗
The organisers of a Hyrox indoor endurance competition in Beijing have apologised and changed the rules after an Australian athlete was allowed to continue despite soiling herself mid-race.View post ↗
CrossFit is the control case. On 76.6K posts it is positive on all eight themes, strongest on coaching and training at +70 and event operations at +63. Nothing in the month moved it, which is what makes the HYROX line readable as a brand problem rather than a category one.
Strength is the whole pitch. “Strong”, “strength” and “healthy” are the leading positive attributes, and coaching and training scores +70. The community reads warm. Community and experience sits at +67, carried by member stories rather than brand messaging. Cleanliness is not a live issue. Hygiene scores +62 in the same month, on the same gate and the same measure, that HYROX scored -37.
Current grievances are scarce. The negatives that surface are old cultural arguments — “culture”, “collective psychosis” — at a few hundred posts each, an order of magnitude below HYROX’s operational complaints. Read that as an absence of current grievance, not a clean bill of health.
What a weeeeeekend in Barcelona! I had so much fun and truly enjoyed every second of this amazing competition!View post ↗
I won’t lie, sometimes I’m exhausted. Sometimes I feel guilty for training. Sometimes I feel guilty for not training.View post ↗
F45 is a gym franchise rather than a race, and the conversation reflects that. On 3.3K posts it posts the single highest cell in the brief — hygiene at +94 — alongside coaching at +72, while athlete welfare sits at +8 on thin polarity.
Cleanliness is a competitive asset. Hygiene scores +94, the highest brand-theme cell here, in the month the category’s hygiene reputation was under attack. The 45-minute format does the work. “Functional training”, “work out” and “group” lead the positive attributes, and community and experience scores +71.
Loyalty mechanics irritate the most loyal. The clearest real complaint in the pool is the Fit Rewards points programme, raised by a member with more than 1,400 classes completed. Welfare signal is thin. Athlete welfare scores +8 on low polarity — directional, not a finding.
The endorphins after an F45 class are unmatched. I love challenging myself in the gym because it helps me feel stronger for everything outside of it.View post ↗
I LOVE F45! I have completed over 1400 classes. It has changed my life. That being said, Fit Rewards is a worthless program.View post ↗
Spartan Race is positive across every theme on 1.3K posts, but muted: its best cells, community and coaching at +44, sit well below CrossFit’s. Crisis response is flat at zero because nobody is discussing Spartan in crisis terms at all.
Trifecta chasing drives the talk. “Win” is the dominant positive attribute and the recurring story is completing the three-race Trifecta. The obstacle format converts runners. Community and coaching both score +44, and posts describe obstacle racing as a different discipline from running.
The complaints are about difficulty, not operations. “Extreme pain” and “cruel punishment” are the negatives that surface — objections to the product working as designed, not to how it is run. No operational grievance appears in the pool.
TRIFECTA COMPLETE! Finally checked off my Spartan Trifecta for the year! From the training to the obstacles, the early mornings to the finish lines—it was all worth it!View post ↗
I thought I had my fitness routine pretty well-rounded… running, lifting, repeat. Then I took on spartan and realized obstacle racing is a WHOLE different kind of fitness.View post ↗
Tough Mudder is the only other brand underwater, at -44 on 974 posts, and its problem is the mirror image of HYROX’s: no single incident, but a steady operational grievance. Athlete welfare and crisis response both sit at -50.
Charity fundraising carries the warmth. “Support mental health” and “vital fund” are among the few positive attributes, and the warmest posts are team fundraising recaps. Fairness is not the argument. Rules and fairness is the one theme where it scores positive; the grievance is about delivery, not integrity.
Race-day delivery is the complaint. Queue times, missing finisher perks and obstacle quality recur across the pool, and “electroshock therapy” is among the most-discussed things. Repeat intent is visibly damaged. Several posts frame a second race as explicitly the last one.
A massive well done to everyone who took on Tough Mudder this weekend. It was challenging, muddy and definitely pushed us outside our comfort zones.View post ↗
Do not do tough mudder. Quality of race is way down from previous years. Waited 4 hours in line to get in.View post ↗
DEKA is the smallest entity here at 241 posts, and its scores — community +90, coaching +91, rules +100 — rest on very thin polarity. Read the row as a directional signal that nothing is wrong, not as a benchmark against the larger brands.
Positioned as the accessible hybrid race. “Functional fitness” leads the positive attributes and posts frame DEKA as a lower-barrier alternative to a full race. It lives inside the HYROX training economy. HYROX is the single most-mentioned thing in DEKA’s own conversation, usually as the race DEKA is preparation for.
Awareness, not quality, is the constraint. The clearest real criticism is that DEKA lacks a following despite being close to HYROX in format. Genuine complaints are otherwise almost absent — at 241 posts that is thin data as much as it is goodwill.
Ten stations, a mile of running, and a whole lot of “are we really doing this.”View post ↗
Spartan has DEKA fit but just doesn’t have the following. Very similar though in terms of type of lifts and shorter running period.View post ↗
Post volume per theme, scaled within each brand. The small figure beside each count is that cell's net sentiment. Coaching and training is the largest theme in the category at 64,744 posts; crisis response, at 13,197, exists almost entirely because of one weekend.
Rules and fairness is the worst cell in the brief at -59, four points below crisis response and 22 below hygiene. The audience has largely accepted that a medical event can happen; what it has not accepted is that officials watched and did not act. Cleaning protocols answer a question people have stopped asking.
Test Does rules and fairness close the gap to hygiene within two race weekends, or does it stay the floor?
It is the only HYROX theme above zero, at +8, on 26,090 posts — the largest single cell in the brand's row and the largest theme in the category. The training identity is intact even where the event operation is not. That is the surface with something left to build on.
Test Does coaching and training hold above zero through the next race weekend, or does contagion pull it under?
The daily curve bottomed a week after race day and has stayed flat on the floor rather than climbing. CrossFit dipped and recovered inside the same window, which is what a passing event looks like. Any internal narrative that the worst has passed is not yet supported by the curve.
Test Does the daily line produce a sustained upward week, or does it hold flat below zero?
It is the only other brand underwater, at -44, and it got there without an incident: queue times, missing finisher perks, obstacle quality, repeated across a small but consistent pool. HYROX's risk is not another Beijing; it is Beijing setting the frame through which ordinary operational complaints are read.
Test Do HYROX's event-operations and price-and-value cells drift further negative in months with no incident at all?
A single brand's sentiment falling tells you nothing about whether the category moved. Scoring five rivals through the same gate, window and method is what makes -59 attributable rather than atmospheric.
They are the dimensions the incident put on trial, not a generic attribute list. Hygiene, welfare, operations, rules, response — plus the three the brand is normally judged on, so a collapse in one is visible against continuity in the others.
Raw daily net sentiment is only meaningful where daily volume supports it. HYROX and CrossFit clear a thousand posts most days; DEKA Fitness averages seven and its raw line flips between 0 and +100. A 7-day trailing volume-weighted mean makes the six comparable without inventing precision.
The skill's default is 27 months. On a two-week-old incident that would bury the signal under two years of ordinary race chatter. One month on the full-resolution index keeps roughly four weeks of pre-incident baseline in frame.
